EAAT2 receptor
EAAT2 receptor is a protein that belongs to the excitatory amino acid transporter (EAAT) family. It is mainly expressed in astroglia cells and is responsible for removing excess glutamate from the extracellular space, preventing neuronal excitotoxicity and hyperexcitability. EAAT2 receptor also regulates synaptic activity and plasticity, and is involved in the pathogenesis of several central nervous system disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. EAAT2 receptor transports glutamate along with sodium, potassium, and hydrogen ions across the cell membrane.
