Homocysteine
Homocysteine is a byproduct of the methylation cycle, which is important for many physiological processes. High levels of homocysteine can cause oxidative stress and inflammation, and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. MTHFR is a gene that codes for an enzyme that helps convert homocysteine to methionine, a building block of proteins. MTHFR mutations can impair this conversion and lead to elevated homocysteine levels. B12 is a vitamin that acts as a cofactor for the MTHFR enzyme and supports the remethylation of homocysteine. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative damage and detoxifies toxins and heavy metals. Glutathione is made from three amino acids: cysteine, glutamate, and glycine. Homocysteine can also be converted to cysteine, which is then used to synthesize glutathione. Therefore, glutathione production depends on homocysteine metabolism, which in turn depends on MTHFR function and B12 availability. Our MTHFR, B12 and Catalase-SOD-Glutathione products might help you to optimize your homocysteine level.
