COMT

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is an enzyme that breaks down certain neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine, in the brain and other tissues. COMT is encoded by the COMT gene, which has different variants that affect its activity and function. COMT plays a role in regulating mood, cognition, pain, stress, and hormone levels. COMT is also involved in the metabolism of some drugs and substances that have a catechol structure, such as estrogen and caffeine.
