MTHFR/Methylation
MTHFR enzyme is an abbreviation for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, which is both a gene and an enzyme in the human body. The MTHFR enzyme converts folate, a type of vitamin B9, into methylfolate, which is needed for a biochemical process called methylation. Methylation affects many cellular functions, such as DNA repair, gene expression, and detoxification. Toxins, sickness, stress or mutations in the MTHFR gene can reduce the activity of the MTHFR enzyme and lead to high levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that can damage blood vessels and cause blood clots. MTHFR issues have been linked to various health conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, mental health disorders, and pregnancy complications.
To methylate homocysteine, 5-MTHF works together with vitamin B12, which acts as a cofactor and a methyl donor. Therefore, both folate and B12 are essential for maintaining healthy levels of homocysteine and preventing cardiovascular diseases.
However, some people have genetic mutations in the MTHFR gene that reduce the activity of the MTHFR enzyme and impair the production of 5-MTHF. This can lead to low levels of folate and B12 in the blood, as well as high levels of homocysteine. People with MTHFR mutations may benefit from supplementing with methylfolate and methylcobalamin, the active forms of folate and B12 that do not require the MTHFR enzyme for their metabolism. These forms of folate and B12 can bypass the genetic defect and restore normal methylation and homocysteine levels. In theory, that is. In practice, it is very difficult not to overdose with methylfolate. With the same dose, you might feel better the first day, and not well at all the second day and thereafter.
